In October 2009 I quit my job, moved out of my apartment, and started going to sea. Since then I have not had a place to call my own – I stay with friends or family in Washington, Oregon, and California; otherwise I’m working (i.e. living) on a boat. Which is why it is so wonderful to have a cozy little room like this all to myself for two weeks.

At the moment I’m working on a ship assist tug in Tacoma and it’s by far the most comfortable boat I’ve worked on yet, not cramped and old like the aging ocean fleet, but not cavernous like the North Sound escort boats. The crew is mellow and the work is consistent. I’d love to come back to this more often, especially now that the money I make is my own, having paid off my tuition in full last spring.

The next step is to submit my license application to the coast guard and wait for approval to take exams, and study in the meantime. So much has happened since my last post months ago; it’s amazing to see the impact that new and wonderful people can have on your life. I’m so thankful for all the changes that have taken place for the better.

I’ll try to post more often now that the whirlwind of school is coming to a close.
